Enzymes:
The use of dietary enzyme supplements has also shown great value in both ruminants and non-ruminants. Enzymes basically act as catalysts to increase the rate of physiological reactions with a minimum of energy expenditure. This makes the metabolism more efficient. By increasing the speed and the efficiency of digestion, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and fiber are broken down more completely. This supplies a more easily absorbed and utilized nutrient base that improve bio-availability to body cells. Particularly in ruminants, fiber and carbohydrate digesting enzymes are important for a continued supply of substrate for healthy micro flora populations and the health benefits that they provide.

SIGNIFICANT ENZYMES AND THEIR PROPERTIES

  1. Amylases: catalyze the digestion of starch into dextrins or soluble saccharides (sugars).

  2. Proteases (or proteinases): split up proteins into their component amino acids or shorter peptide chains that may be soluble.

  3. Lipases: split up animal and vegetable fats and oils into their component parts; glycerol and fatty acids.

  4. Cellulase (of various types): breaks down the complex molecule of cellulose into more digestible components of single and multiple sugars.

  5. Beta-glucanase (or gumase): digest one type of vegetable gum into sugars and or dextrins. (Strictly speaking, cellulase, pentosanase, xylanase are types of beta-glucanase.)

  6. Pectinase: digest pectin and similar highly polymerized carbohydrates including polygalacturonic acid of plant origin.

  7. Lactase: catalyzes the hydrolysis of the disaccharide lactose into galactose and glucose.

Many other unmentioned vitamins, minerals, trace elements, phyto compounds and other naturally occurring food factors are also involved in the absorption, metabolism and health enhancing effects of the primary nutrients in this discussion.

The sensitive and extraordinary balance of these nutrients and nutrient cofactors is critically important to maximize their usefulness in any lean mass elevating, fat decreasing nutritional program.

This complex series of hormonal, nutritive and dietary cofactor interrelationships form the foundation for effective nutritional protocols to augment the natural processes for optimizing metabolic balance and efficiency for increasing lean mass and decreasing body fat.

Maintaining a healthy balance is of paramount importance. Nutrient excesses, deficiencies or imbalances can cause further long term deficiencies and imbalances that may jeopardize optimal health. Balance is the key.

The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first is to bring to light the benefits of an all natural, balanced nutritional approach to the care and feeding of all show animals. Such an approach can maximize the overall health, fitness and well-being of show animals without the use of potentially harmful and outright dangerous "performance enhancing" quick fixes and short cuts for short term gain.

The use of balanced nutritional protocols will build a strong, stable, lasting state of health that can optimize the natural fat burning and muscular enhancing processes.

The second purpose of this paper is to educate. You, the owner and guardian of your animals, desire the best and most effective programs. The value of a proper nutritional program is enormous. New scientific information on the application of nutrition science in enhancing health and fitness is growing exponentially. However, there is a considerable amount of nutrition misinformation and inaccurate claims for certain formulations. Sometimes this is an over zealous oversight. Sometimes it is done purposely to sell a product or products. It is our hope that only the highest quality, best balanced nutritional formulations will be utilized in the show industry. The first step in the realization of this hope is education in sound, valid nutrition science principles.

By utilizing a health building, balance enhancing, natural, honest, ethical way of life for all show animals the health and well being of the animals and owners alike will take a quantum leap forward.
